Want more? Here are some additional tips to consider:

In Your Living Room…

  • Seal air leaks throughout your home. Doing so can result in up to 30% energy savings, according to
  • Change the filter in your furnace every 3 months – dirty filters can slow down air flow and force it to work harder.

In Your Bedroom…

  • Turn down the thermostat by 10-15 degrees – doing this for 8 hours can save you 5-20% annually on your heating bill!
  • Install blackout curtains to block out heat in the summer, and keep heat in during the winter.
  • Use ceiling fans instead of air conditioning – fans typically cost 1 cent per day, and can make the room feel 3-8 degrees cooler.

In Your Kitchen…

  • Wash only full loads of dishes in the dishwasher.
  • Replace older appliances, such as refrigerators, with ENERGY STAR products.
  • Use your microwave or toaster oven to warm up leftovers – they use less energy than a conventional oven.
  • Air dry your dishes instead of using the dry cycle to reduce your dishwasher energy.

In Your Bathroom…

  • Lower the thermostat on your water heater. For every 10 degrees you reduce the temperature, you can save 3 to 5% on your bill.
  • Cut down your shower time – even one less minute can save up to 5 gallons of water!
  • Switch to water-efficient shower heads to reduce your water use.

Around the Exterior…

  • Plant deciduous trees (the type that sheds their leaves seasonally) on the west side of the house to create shade and bring down temperatures. This can reduce your air conditioning costs by up to 30%!
